FDM 3D Printing: Functional Components and Robust Prototypes
Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is the industrial workhorse of additive manufacturing. We transform your digital CAD data into physical objects that withstand mechanical stress and accurately represent complex geometries. From initial design studies to functional small series, we provide reliable execution in our Vienna-based workshop.
The FDM process, also known as FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication), is based on the precise layer-by-layer deposition of thermoplastic filament. By carefully selecting the material, we create components with high impact strength, thermal stability, or specific surface hardness. In our Vienna studio, we operate a modern fleet of 12 printers to produce both single prototypes and small batches efficiently.
Whether you are an engineer verifying the fit of a new assembly or a designer requiring a physical model for a presentation, FDM offers the optimal balance between cost, speed, and material strength. We assist you in selecting the correct polymer to maximize the lifespan and functionality of your end product, ensuring it meets the technical demands of its intended environment.
Your Path to a Finished Component
Data Verification & Slicing
We analyze your STL or STEP files for printability, check wall thicknesses, and optimize the orientation in the build volume along with the support structures.
Material Configuration
Based on your technical requirements, we select the appropriate filament, such as PETG for outdoor use or ABS for higher temperature resistance.
The Printing Process
Manufacturing takes place in our controlled environment. We monitor the process closely to ensure consistent layer quality and structural integrity.
Finishing & Quality Control
After printing, we manually remove support structures and verify the component's dimensions against our tolerance standard of 0.2 mm.
Who is FDM 3D Printing the Right Choice For?
FDM technology is particularly advantageous for users who require mechanically resilient parts. Engineers and startups primarily use our service for functional prototypes where mechanical integrity is more critical than a mirror-smooth surface. Architects value the ability to realize large-scale models (up to 400x400x400 mm) cost-effectively. Additionally, workshops requiring custom jigs or replacement parts for machinery find FDM to be the first choice, as materials like ABS provide high industrial robustness.
How Collaboration Works at Choanaevo
The process begins with the submission of your files via our contact form or email. We provide a quote based on the estimated material consumption and print time. Upon order confirmation and a 30% deposit, we start production. For complex projects, we keep you updated during the printing phase. Once the part is completed, you receive a notification for pickup at our Vienna studio or we ship the package to your specified address.
What to Prepare for a Successful Order
To minimize lead times, we ideally require files in STL, OBJ, or STEP format. Please ensure that all dimensions are specified in millimeters. If you have specific requirements regarding infill density or wall thickness, please inform us in advance. For a detailed guide on how to optimize your models, please visit our guide: How to Prepare Your Model for Printing.
The Result: What You Receive From Us
You receive a physical component precisely manufactured according to your digital specifications. Parts are securely packed to prevent transport damage. Our delivery includes:
- The printed object in the selected material color.
- Clean removal of all necessary support structures.
- Dimensional verification against the provided CAD data.
- Documentation of the used parameters upon request.
- The assurance of local production within Vienna.
Lead Times and Scheduling
Our average lead time for a prototype is approximately 3 days. The standard manufacturing time from order placement is about 5 business days. If you have a project with extreme priority, we offer an express service with a 50% surcharge on standard costs to prioritize your project in the queue. Please note that the physical print time (the actual hours the machine runs) cannot be shortened by express payments; only the waiting time before the print starts is reduced.
What is NOT Included in Standard FDM Printing
Standard printing covers the additive manufacturing process. It does not include intensive surface treatments such as chemical smoothing (e.g., acetone baths for ABS), professional sanding, or painting. These services are offered separately in our Post-Processing section. Similarly, the creation of a 3D model from a 2D sketch is not part of this service and is billed under 3D Modeling.
Pricing and Value Added Tax (VAT)
Pricing for FDM printing is calculated transparently based on actual material consumption in grams. The total price consists of material costs and a machine fee. All prices listed on our website are gross prices, including the statutory Austrian VAT of 20%. For business customers (B2B), we provide the net amount separately. Final billing occurs upon project completion, with the initial deposit credited.
| Material Type | Price incl. VAT (20%) | Price excl. VAT | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (PLA/PETG) | 0.85 € | 0.71 € | Gram of Material |
| Technical (ABS/ASA) | 1.20 € | 1.00 € | Gram of Material |
Frequently Asked Questions about FDM Printing
We operate with a standard tolerance of ±0.2 mm. Depending on the geometry and material (e.g., shrinkage in ABS), this may vary. For high-precision fits, we recommend planning a corresponding clearance in your CAD data.
For parts exposed to UV radiation and weather, we recommend PETG or ASA. PLA is not weather-resistant and can deform under high sunlight, for example, inside a car.
Our maximum build volume is 400x400x400 mm. Larger objects can be printed by strategically dividing them into several segments, which are then bonded together.
To cover machine setup and material preparation, we have established a minimum order value of 25 € per order.
