Our refinement services are aimed at a wide range of users who want to go beyond the purely functional aspect of a 3D print. Engineers and startups use our services to optically upgrade functional prototypes for investor presentations, ensuring they no longer look "printed" but rather like injection-molded parts.

Architects and designers have their physical models smoothed and painted to realistically represent material simulations (e.g., metal or plastic optics). Similarly, we support workshops that require specific jigs or spare parts that need an extremely smooth surface due to friction or hygiene requirements.

How the Collaboration Works

The process begins with a detailed consultation regarding the desired end result. You can either send us a model that has already been printed or commission the post-processing directly following a print order here in Vienna. We document the state before processing and define the target specifications for the surface quality.

During the processing, we maintain close contact, especially regarding color selection or the degree of gloss. Since each step (sanding, priming, painting) requires specific drying times, we plan the workflows precisely to avoid compromising quality through rushed processes. Upon completion, you receive a quality check and the finished model in protective packaging.

What You Should Prepare as a Client

To achieve an optimal result, we require clear specifications. If the model comes from an external source, it must be stable enough for the sanding process. We recommend specifying areas that must remain absolutely dimensionally accurate and must not be sanded.

For painting, providing a color code (e.g., RAL or Pantone) is helpful. If you do not have a specific color, we are happy to advise you on-site at our workshop in Vienna. Additionally, information about the later use of the part (e.g., mechanical stress, UV exposure) is important to choose the right paint system.

What You Receive at the End

You receive a physical component that far exceeds the standard 3D print in terms of optics and haptics. Depending on the chosen option, the model is either perfectly sanded and primed (ready for your own painting) or fully painted and sealed.

In addition to the finished object, we provide documentation of the steps performed. If minimal geometric adjustments were made during post-processing, we will explicitly inform you. All models are securely packed to protect freshly painted surfaces from scratches during transport.

Timeframes and Delivery

Post-processing is a time-intensive, manual process. The actual working time varies depending on the complexity and size of the object. Since paints and primers require specific curing times, the average lead time for a complete refinement is approximately 5 business days.

For urgent projects, we offer express processing, which involves an additional fee. We recommend planning the post-processing already during the initial print order to optimize logistics and shorten the total duration until delivery.

What is NOT Included in Post-Processing

Please note that our standard post-processing does not include structural changes to the design. We smooth the surface but do not change the fundamental geometry of the model. Creating new CAD data is also not part of this service; this falls under our 3D Modeling service.

Furthermore, we do not perform chemical smoothing processes (such as acetone baths for ABS) if this endangers the dimensional accuracy of the part, unless explicitly agreed upon. Certification of surfaces for medical or aerospace applications is also not part of our offering.

Pricing and Value Added Tax

We calculate the costs for post-processing on an hourly basis. This allows for fair billing, as a small, complex part often requires more manual labor than a large, simple surface. Prices are listed as net amounts plus the statutory VAT of 20%.
